Mobility Parking Permit

Parking Permits for Mobility Parks

The orange cards found in the window of some vehicles show a mobility parking permit.

This is a nationally recognised scheme which provides a card (Parking permit) to a person who is eligible for use in whatever vehicle the cardholder is travelling in.

This allows them to park in accessible car parks (outlined in yellow and displaying the international symbol of access – a wheelchair sign), you can also use standard car parks and metered spaces for longer than stated times, and use time restricted zones i.e. P30 for longer than stated times as set out in local council bylaws.

The scheme is run by CCS Disability Action in partnership with all local councils and GP’s.

To be eligible for a card the person must either rely on mobility aides such as crutches, walking sticks, or walking frame OR be unable to walk more than 200 metres unaided because of their condition.

Contact your GP (General Practitioner/doctor), Medical Specialist or nearest CCS Disability Action branch on 0800 227 2255 to request an application form, download a form at www.ccsdisabilityaction.org.nz or contact us here at UP2DATE on 07 3079101 or bev@up2date.co.nz to request one to be sent to you in the post.

All applications have to be certified by a doctor.  And a permit will only be issued with the doctors signed approval and when the application form and payment ($50.00 for 5 years or short term card for $35) has been received by your local CCS Disability Action branch (contact details are on the application form).

Once processed the successful applicant will receive a card with a membership number on it and will be valid for 5 year’s.  Individuals may also apply for a temporary permit valid for 12months for $30.00.

The cards must always be clearly displayed on the vehicles dash with the membership number visible whenever parking in the parks.  Even if you hold a parking permit and park without displaying your card you will receive a fine if caught by those monitoring the parks.

A further caution! Despite how frustrating it may be to see those that don’t have the cards parked in these spaces, do not approach them. Leave it to the professionals. Fines have gone up recently to $140 so let them be fined and stay safe.
