As they say be prepared and stay safe
It is really important to plan for fire safety. Installation of smoke alarms in the correct positions, keeping them maintained and having an evacuation plan is essential.
Most fire stations in New Zealand will come to your house, advise where to place the smoke alarms, and provide assistance with installation and replace batteries for the elderly and people with disabilities. Special smoke alarms are available to assist those with hearing disabilities.
Call your local fire station for advice on where to install the smoke alarms, and assistance with installation for the elderly and people with disabilities.
Work out an escape plan - you should know two ways of escaping from every room. If you need help developing a plan, firefighters would be happy to assist.
Practice your escape plan every few months. Keep a telephone and torch by the bed. Always turn off your electric blanket before getting into bed. Don't smoke in bed. If there is an emergency dial 111 immediately.
Call your local fire station (listed in White Pages under Fire Service) for more information.
