The access rooms are like two rooms joined giving two double beds and a sofa bed if needed. There is a wet area shower and both the shower and toilet have rails but no shower seat or stool and there is a wooden edging around the shower space which I assume is to stop leakage but makes it very difficult to roll in, but it is doable. The bathroom is nice and roomy also. The restaurant serves delicious food and the tables are reasonably accessible, however because of the smorgasbord arrangement and the number of tables in the dining room it is a bit of an obstacle course. My latest visit this weekend 18th July and all I can say is Renovation, Renovation, Renovation. It seems that the motel has been taken over and the owners are doing it all up and the number of access units on the plans seems to be multiple which is exciting. The staff are really great and accommodating which really helps. The initial stay was in unit 12 which had a double bed, a single bed, a couch and all the modern appliances such as flat screen tv, stereo, and dvd player. There was a kitchen with bench top hob and microwave and you can order breakfasts etc from the motel. The bathroom in unit 12 as well as the room is “tight” with little room to move. The toilet has a handrail and is close to the basin, there is a tiled wet shower area but the camber on the floor is so steep that my shower chair kept rolling down to one side. The shower is on a sliding unit and the water pressure and size of the shower head makes it heavenly. Entrance into unit 12 is flat and accessible. The second stay which was this weekend we were in unit 11 and to call it an access unit was a little more of a stretch when it came to getting in as the aluminium doorway was approximately 2 inches off the ground meaning my power chair couldn’t get in. Luckily I travel with a portable ramp and once in we were pleasantly surprised. The layout and size of the room was great, and still had a queen bed and a single. There was a kitchen, not accessible but useful if others can use it. The bathroom was much better and the wet floor area was flat and useable, we were also offered a shower chair on arrival. This is one of the units yet to be done up so hoping it can only get better. Chifley Suites, Auckland – 28 August 200974 Albert St, Auckland Central, (near the corner of Wyndham and Albert Sts)http://www.chifleysuitesauckland.co.nz/ These apartments situated in the centre of Auckland City, have been really well designed with accessible units. 300 metres from the Sky Tower and a free shuttle service to airport 3 minutes away. This is definitely about location. Although it was very difficult to find how to get into the Apartments from Queen Street, there is underground parking associated with the Apartments which is great. If staying long term or wishing to self cater, these units are ideal and well equipped with oven, microwave, dishwasher etc. Access to rooms is via lift, our unit was on the 22 floor, but we are told there are access units on many levels. The Apartment consisted of one bedroom with a double bed, which was able to be converted into two singles, a living room with full size dining table, fold out sofa bed and small balcony with the city views. We found the bedroom very short on space, once the bed had been separated, so it may be advised that if needing two beds the sofa in the lounge might be a better option. The bathroom is very new and well designed, with non slip floors, L shape railings beside the toilet and in the shower, which was a wet area shower, with sliding shower head. The hand basin was well situated and mirror was able to be seen from my wheelchair which was a great thing. There was also a washing machine and dryer in the bathroom, which again would be great convenience if long term stay. The designers have also planned well in terms of light fittings being at a good height for wheelchair users, as well as visual alarm systems for hearing impairmed and a hand set which allows people in the apartment to open the unit door at the push of a button when they have visitors. Although there is no restaurant on site, it is close to many cafes and restaurants if you wish to venture out or the apartments provide a restaurant runner facility where you can order from a number of restaurants in the vicinity and there will have it delivered to your room, you can also get continental breakfast packs delivered for in house dining. Although this is priced at the higher end of the market its definitely made up for in location if the centre city of Auckland is where you want to be. All in all I would say this was a well thought out apartment with some good features, however it is very small and little things such as placement of dining table and no access on to the balcony have been over seen. |
