The Wheelchair Accessible H Tree Track Whirinaki Forest This is a 3.2km track which has been built by Department of Conservation to be suitable for people using wheelchairs and other mobility aids. This 45min loop track starts of Old Fort Road, doing a loop and coming out at the car park from which you entered. The Whirinaki National Park in which the walk is situated is 90km South East of Rotorua off Ruatahuna Road via State Highway 38. The enterance to the H-tree track is past the Minganui village down river road into fort road. It is approximately 1 1/2hrs drive from Whakatane. Car parks are situated right beside the start of the track in a well surfaced area. The track with its length means that you really get in the heart of the bush to see the many beautiful trees and wild life which Whirinaki is famous for. Early morning and early afternoon are the best times for bird life spotting. This isn’t a straight track it has lots of turns and slight gradiants throughout which makes the track interesting. Department of Conservation have placed landing areas and bays with seats in some of the feature points of the track for people to rest and take in the sights. The H Tree Track gets its name from two Rimu Trees which have joined in the middle making a grand H along the track. We have had people with power chairs, mobility scooters and other mobility aids through this track, who managed it well. There is also an accessible toilet situated in the carpark. This is a must do track for those who enjoy New Zealand’s bush and is perfect for both disabled people and families. For a map of the area to the track click here ![]() ![]()
